Best Laptops for Developers – Short Guide 2017

If you are a student or software developer and want to invest in a new laptop for your programming work, you probably already know what the specifications of your next computer should be.  Programmers have to execute a lot of code, run several programs at the same time, run virtual machines… and so on, which means a powerful machine. But you don’t necessarily need a workhorse to write code, and especially if you have a budget, you need to pay close attention to your needs as a programmer and find a laptop that offers a good combination of performance and cost. But with hundreds and hundreds of different laptops, it can be very difficult to find the laptop that best fits your needs (and your wallet). Before we start making a list of the best laptops for developers, let’s look at the most important things to consider when choosing a laptop for programming.

What specifications should a programmer pay attention to when purchasing a new laptop?

In short, there is no special laptop for programming, it just depends on the type of programming you are going to do. Even a cheap laptop can write code to a text file, but if you plan to develop Android applications in Google Studios, you need more power.  Here are some keys to help you choose a good notebook:

For web development:

In this case, a laptop with any budget is sufficient. It is recommended to purchase a laptop with at least Intel i3 and 4 GB RAM.  The integrated graphics card is more than enough if you do not plan to play games.  As far as the hard drive is concerned: If you can afford a laptop with a hard drive, your laptop will be much faster.  But SSDs are not cheap and have their own disadvantages (e.g. storage capacity). This article explains the pros and cons of hard drives and solid state drives: Advantages and disadvantages of SSD over HDD.

When choosing a notebook for programming and website design, it is recommended that a minimum screen size of 13.3 inches is used, preferably in Full HD.

For development of low resource-intensive applications:

You should get at least an Intel i5 or i7 kernel, if possible, and 8 GB of RAM.  Consider adding more RAM if you need multitasking or energy-consuming applications. As far as the GPU is concerned, it depends on your needs; a graphics card integrated in the CPU is usually sufficient, but if possible, you will get at least a low or medium sized graphics card. In this case, the use of an SSD is also recommended, but if you have a lot of files, you should consider using an external drive or switching to a conventional hard drive. And as always, when purchasing a notebook, you will need at least a 13-inch screen for programming. Also note that if you occasionally need to do graphic design (e.g. if you are a web developer), it is advisable to use a laptop with an IPS screen.

For the development of heavy-duty applications:

When buying a laptop to program heavy-duty applications, consider the Intel i7 core with at least 8GB of RAM (and free update slots). A special video card is also very important here, the medium/high level of Nvidia/AMD is recommended. From a storage point of view, you need a lot of space, but today this is not a problem because most laptops are equipped with a 1TB hard drive. However, if you need the speed of the SSD, keep in mind that the storage capacity will be limited. The display is also very important here, 15.6 Full HD is a strict minimum to open windows side by side; you should also consider a 17 and/or 4K display.

Recommended system requirements for some of the most popular Integrated Development Environments (IDEs):

Visual Studio:  Windows 7 SP1, 1.8 GHz or faster processor, 4 GB RAM recommended, hard disk space: up to 130 GB free space depending on the features installed; typical installations require 20 to 50 GB free space.  Graphics card that supports a screen resolution of at least 720p (1280 x 720); Visual Studio works best with WXGA (1366 x 768) resolution and higher.

Storm: At least 1 GB RAM, 2 GB RAM recommended, screen resolution of at least 1024×768

Adobe Dreamweaver CC 2017: Intel® Core 2 or AMD Athlon® 64 processor; 2 GHz or faster processor, Microsoft Windows 7 with Service Pack 1, 2 GB RAM (4 GB recommended), 2 GB free hard drive space for installation; additional hard drive space (approx. 2 GB) required during installation. Dreamweaver cannot be installed on removable USB sticks. 1280×1024 display with 16-bit graphics card.

Embezzlement: 1.5 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, 1 GB free hard disk space.

NetBeans: Windows 7 pro, Intel i5 kernel or equivalent, 4 GB RAM, 1.5 GB free disk space

Google Android Studio: Windows 7, minimum 3 GB RAM, 8 GB RAM recommended; plus 1 GB for Android emulator, 500 GB Android Studio hard disk space, minimum 1.5 GB for Android SDK, system file emulator, screen resolution of at least 1280×800.

MSI GL62M 7RD-1407: A powerful laptop for programming and light gaming

Best Laptops for Developers – Short Guide 2017

The MSI GL62M 7RD-1407 is an entry-level gaming notebook that has a lot to offer at a certain price. The notebook is equipped with an Intel Core i5-7300HQ (2.5-3.1 GHz) processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD and a dedicated NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1050 2G GDDR5 graphics card. This beast can run most of today’s games without any problems and works equally well in all other applications.

The case is completely made of matte plastic, which does not hinder the tuning, because the notebook still knows how to look good. It is clearly not meant to be worn and used outdoors: First of all, the brightness of the screen/viewing angle is not sufficient for use in a sunny environment and also the battery life is not exceptional. The latter, however, is to be expected because under the bonnet we have an i5-7300HQ of information and a special graphics card. Personally, I think MSI could have handled the screen better; the MSI GL62M 7RD-1407 comes with a medium TN panel, which is not really suitable for a gaming laptop. But on the other hand, at this price level, it’s not a deal breaker!

The MSI GL62M 7RD-1407 is equipped with several connectors including 1 USB Type C, 2 USB 3.0, 1USB 2.0, HMDI and Ethernet.

Dell Inspiron i5577-7359BLK-PUS: Reasonably priced multimedia game and slot machine

Best Laptops for Developers – Short Guide 2017

Like the MSI GL62M 7RD-1407, the Inspiron i5577 is Dell’s attempt to create a powerful game notebook for the small budget that won’t break you. And I must say they did, because staying under $900, the Inspiron i5577-7359BLK-PUS ticks virtually every box:  They are equipped with a powerful Intel Core i7-7700HQ Quad-Core 7. The new generation, 8GB RAM (expandable up to 32GB), a special Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card, 128GB SSD and 1TB hard drive in a well thought-out metal housing.

It’s very difficult to find discomfort. The Inspiron i5577 can play all your daily performance, multitasking, IDE and most of the latest games in Full HD without delay.  Like most cheap game laptops, the only drawback of this laptop is the : This is a normal TN panel that looks very good, but has limited viewing angles. Not that we expected Dell to enable an IPS panel in this price range, but a better TN panel would make this laptop even better.
