  • Uses 802.11ax standard for ultra fast speeds
  • Wireless communication with speeds up to 6 Gbps
  • It’s not a budget, but it’s a blow!

This brand-new beast from Netgear is a scary powerful router with ultra-fast speeds and almost all the features you could ever need in a router.

The main feature is that it is one of the few routers offering wireless AX (also known as wifi 6), allowing you to enjoy even faster speeds than those available with wireless air conditioning. It also features two dual-band USB (3.0) ports and can combine two 1 Gb/s LAN ports to provide 2 Gb/s bandwidth (also useful for stability).

Of course, all this technology is first-class, and it is more cost-effective than the other routers on the list. However, if you want to be sure that you are buying one of the best routers on the market, with its many possibilities, you cannot go too far with this offer from Netgear.

Although the Netgear Nighthawk AX12 router above may slightly confuse the other routers in this list, it is important to emphasize that the other routers are still excellent, powerful and fast. Suitable for most houses…

This Asus offering includes features such as wireless 802.11ac connectivity, beamforming, USB 3.0 and dual-band connectivity. With these features, you can get a fast wireless network throughout your home.

It also has additional features, such as QoS, that can improve performance, such as video calling by prioritising certain applications that require a wireless serial connection.

In general, this is a very good router for a much lower price than the Netgear Nighthawk AX12, and it will be more than enough for most people.

We have something to say about the 68 hours.

You can get almost everything you expect from an 802.11ac router, including beamforming, dual-band, QoS, 1 GHz processor, parental control, and Gbps Ethernet ports.

It’s an excellent router for gaming, and it shouldn’t have too many problems even when connecting multiple devices.

All in all, it’s still a great router and will be perfect for most people who want to upgrade it.

6. ASUS RT-AX88U AX6000 (other Wifi 6 routers)

  • AX wireless for broadband

So here’s another WiFi 6 router – the new WiFi standard that offers more wireless speed for more customers at the same time. The use of OFDMA wifi 6 OFDMA technology also reduces the delay (ping). Players love that deep ping!

It is also possible to activate WTFast, which is encrypted in the router’s operating system. WTFast is a service that transmits game traffic over a less concentrated and less priority network in order to achieve a lower latency. Useful for FPS and games that require quick reflexes. The R7000P also works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, so you can control the connected devices in your home with your voice.

8. TP-Link Archer A7 AC1750 (Router with budget version)

If you want to save on rent without paying for the Verizon router/gateway, and you just want a simple replacement, you can do worse than the TP-Link Archer A7.

The router works with theoretical speeds of up to 1.75 Gbps on 2-band Wi-Fi and 4-Gigabit LAN ports, but is not down.

It has a USB 2.0 port that can be used for a network drive or printer. There are also some basic functions of QoS that can help prevent network monopolists from destroying your network.

The hard drive also has four LAN and USB 3.0 ports.

Using your own router instead of Verizon‘s FIOS Gateway (Router)

Best way to use your own router with Verizon FIOS

With the new FIOS parameters (you must have an Ethernet connection on the ONT (the ONT contains a modem)) you have some simple options, depending on the FIOS package :

Internet package (no television)

1) Simply remove the Verizon FIOS Gateway (actually a wireless router) by removing the Ethernet cable from the ONT.

2) Add your own router and connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port of the WAN.

3) If this does not work, call Verizon and ask them to enable the Ethernet port.

Internet and TV configuration package

1) Simply remove your Verizon FIOS Gateway (actually a router) by removing the Ethernet cable from the ONT (modem).

2) Add your own router and connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port of the WAN.

3) If this does not work, call Verizon and ask them to enable the Ethernet port.

4) Add a MoCA adapter (like this) instead of the FIOS gateway. Then connect the MoCA adapter to the new router via Ethernet. This allows you to view content online (on your TV) without using the Verizon Gateway.

For older FIOS installations (no Ethernet port on ONT), follow the bridging instructions under

Exclusion of liability : We strongly recommend that you contact Verizon Support before attempting to connect a new wireless router using one of these methods. Explain to them why you want to upgrade.

The last thing you want to do is destroy your Verizon kit and warranty and possibly run out of support and/or internet services!

Video: How do I replace my Verizon Gateway with my ownGateway?

Before you start, word of warning. We remind you again… Before playing with your network or buying a new router, we strongly recommend that you call Verizon and make sure your entire network is working with your new or planned router. There is no one-size-fits-all solution! There are many variables!

Set the Verizon modem/router to bridge mode! (old method and sometimes still used)

Another option (often for older installations),, is to simply add the router to the network and back up the FIOS Gateway. To do this, turn your Fios router/gateway into a bridge that will lead the Internet (you still need a Fios router – since it has a built-in modem configured to communicate with Verizon) to the Ethernet (WAN) port of the router you wish to use.

Then login to your Verizon Gateway (IP address: User: Administrator Password: 1234 or Administrator or just leave the field blank) and set the router to bridge mode, configure the LAN settings (DHCP and wireless) and connect the new router with an Ethernet cable.

For DSL : Visit the Verizon website for complete information about the Verizon hardware you are using.

For the fibers: Read this message for more information on how to connect your device via the gateway.

Okay, this is the last time we mention it – call Verizon before you try any of these methods!

Why use your own router? Get the features you need with your own router!

There are many advantages to setting up your own router on a service such as Verizon Fios.

First of all, the can save you money every month by renting the Verizon Gateway (router). Why pay Verizon every month when you can buy your own router and start saving on one-off routing costs after a few months?

Another reason to use your own router with Verizon Fios is that with your own router you can use exactly the router you need.

Whether you have configured an existing router as you wish or need a router with features not available on a standard Verizon router. Advanced QoS, USB 3.0 ports for stunning centralized storage, wireless AX (wifi 6), wireless tri-band. Tell me, he’s probably not at the gates of Verizon!

You can even use the DD-WRT flash router. Here, you absolutely must add your own.

Last words

And these are our best routers you can use instead of the standard FIOS Gateway from Verizon.

We preferred the AX12 Nighthawk , and put it at the top of the list. Another good choice is the Asus RT-AC68U, which is very suitable for inexpensive users.

If you are looking for a large budget, consider Archer A7.

The standard FIOS Gateway is not particularly bad. It’s just that after a while the costs are so high that it makes sense to think about buying your own router. This saves you money and gives you an even better router! Don’t forget to contact Verizon to make sure you can use your own router (we’d be surprised if this is a problem, especially with the new ONT modem).

Thanks for reading and leave a comment if you want to buy a router. And when you’ve bought it, let everyone who’s underneath know.
