Are you missing the menu system that comes with your Netgear router? Do you want to configure more than the Asus router menu allows? Do you want more options for your Linksys? In this case, installing third-party firmware may be the best solution for you.
Which is the best DD-WRT router?
What is firmware on a third party router?
Routers traditionally come with available firmware and are configured in GUI format. Often the number that the user can configure is rather limited, and the monitoring tools can be few. …or don’t exist at all!
third party firmware, and we’re gonna choose the big three on this one: DD-WRT, OpenWRT and Tomato can revolutionize your router.
By flashing your router’s firmware, you can have more playback options and make small adjustments that may not have been possible before. Basically you start with the existing streaming-firmware (streaming-firmware refers to the firmware that comes with your router).
- Firmware and software
If your router is compatible, you can send the firmware from a third party by replacing the standard version.
Look out! Look out! If you choose the wrong firmware or update the wrong firmware, you may crash your router. Walling is another way of saying garbage. Your router shuts down… and no one wants it!
Routers with pre-installed firmware can be purchased on request. For more information, see below.

DD-WRT vs Tomato vs OpenWRT: Firmware types
DD-WRT is the most popular firmware of the three. Probably because it is relatively easy to install and configure. It also has many functions for most people there. Only the best technicians would think there should be more of them!
Okay, so it can’t be installed on as many different router models as OpenWRT (we’ll come back to that later), but the above advantages probably outweigh the disadvantages for most router owners.
Features include a fairly comprehensive QoS interface, advanced wireless settings and a VPN.
The support is also excellent! The DD-WRT-forums are a shelter for many very skilled people. So if you have any questions, this is a good place to hang out.

Tomato router firmware
Tomato firmware is probably the easiest to use. The GUI menu system is relatively intuitive and allows the user to get his hands dirty to a certain extent. But maybe not as much as his colleagues.
Yes, there are options to configure the quality of service and the virtual private network (VPN). There are also advanced firewall functions and the ability to customize access at user level. A great advantage is the control instrument. The firmware of the tomato actually follows in real time, which can lead to some deviations.
If all this suits you, Tomato can be installed on your router! A disadvantage is that the tomato is not compatible with a large number of routers such as OpenWRT or DDWRT.
If you actually buy a new router for your installation, this is of course not too big a problem. However, if you want to upgrade a router that you already own, you have a better chance than the other two compatibility options.
There are various tomato mixtures (called forks), including Shibby and AdvancedTomate.

OpenWRT is the original of three and is again based on Linux. It was just a command line, but with LuCI or Gargoyle there is now fortunately a graphical interface (but it might not work). But OpenWRT is probably the hardest of the three to get started. The most important thing is to make sure you have downloaded the right image file for your bet.
There are many tutorials (including You Tube videos) if you really want to get your hands dirty during installation and setup!
Although it can be more difficult to configure, if you know what you’re doing, you have more control over your router than any of the 3 firmware options! Especially if you continue in the line of command,
OpenWRT also has by far the largest number of routers for installation.
Open WRT also offers features such as Quality of Service (QoS) and advanced VPN functionality.
If there’s a reason why OpenWRT isn’t the most popular of the three, it’s because it’s damn hard to manage (if you’re new). Unfortunately, the command line frightens a lot of potential users. This is, of course, perfectly understandable.
However, with the addition of a graphical user interface, installation and configuration has become much easier. We hope that the popularity of OpenWRT will grow.

Are you afraid of renewal? Buy a configured Flash router!
If you are worried about the masonry of your milling cutter, or if you are afraid that it won’t work, don’t worry. It is possible to purchase a router with pre-installed firmware. Flashrouter, for example, offers new routers that have been flashed and successfully tested.
You can also purchase additional modules, including VPN integration and technical support, so you can customize your router to meet your needs.
Today you have to pay a little more than buying a router with memory firmware and upgrading. And the guarantee is valid for a shorter period of time. But if you accidentally make a mistake, you should try to ruin your router. Or if your router decides to bury it anyway!

Recommended firmware router: Non-woven Falcon R7000
> Buy the R7000 with pre-configured DD-WRT or Tomato on Flash routers <
It’s hard to decide, but a really good break is what we were aiming for.
The R7000 is a router recommended below and supported by Tomato Shibby & AdvancedTomato.
Netgear Nighthawk R7000 was the first router in the high-end Nighthawk series.
It was a very popular version and as such DD-WRT, OpenWRT and Tomato (at least Shibby & Advanced Tomato) all have firmware for it.
It is no longer the last or the best router, but even with its firmware it still has punch. If you wink at one of these three bad guys, it gets even better.

Or, if you just want to buy a router and flash it yourself, go to Amazon.
