Dell XPS 13 vs HP Spectre x360 2-in-1 Convertible Laptop Comparison

It’s the perfect time to live in the high-end segment of the ultrabook market. In this segment, notebook manufacturers are setting trends and redefining consumer expectations. In recent years, the Dell XPS 13 has quietly taken its place on the throne of Windows 10 ultrabooks and has only occasionally challenged smaller ultrabooks that never took its place. But the meeting of the board of directors of Dell XPS 13 is over since HP has updated its Ultrabook Convertible 2-in-1 Spectrum x360, solved everything that was wrong with the previous version and also surpassed the Dell XPS 13 in almost every respect.

Dell XPS 13 vs. HP Spectrum x360 Design and creation

The Dell XPS 13 and HP Spectre x360 are only 0.54 inches thick. The Dell XPS 13 is slightly lighter because the housing is made of carbon fiber instead of solid aluminum. The use of carbon fibre has several advantages and disadvantages compared to aluminium. In the first place, as said, there is weight loss. A hundred grams may not be much, but in this category of notebooks every gram counts.

Second, the carbon fiber wrap never wanders too far from room temperature, protecting your palms from the few seconds of cold when you first put your hands on an aluminum laptop and protecting your crotch from excessive heat.

The most notable drawback is the lack of polished, high quality notebooks, as is the case with high-end notebooks such as the HP Spectrum x360. Although carbon fibre is a high quality material, its superior quality is mainly due to its physical properties and not to its feel.

Neither the Dell XPS 13 nor the HP Spectrum x360 got the 360 degree connection just in time. The Dell XPS 13 is too rugged, although we expected it to be less rugged in use, and the HP Spectrum x360 is too lame and too robust.

Where the HP Spectrum x360 shines first are the available ports. There is one USB Type A connector, two USB Type C connectors that support Thunderbolt 3 and power supply, and a 3.5 mm audio connector for headphones and microphone. The Dell XPS 13 has only one USB Type C port and one Thunderbolt 3 port. It also has a microSD card slot, which HP doesn’t have.

Dell XPS 13 vs HP Spectrum x360 display

The latest version of the HP Spectrum x360 was retained by the display, which was better than most notebook displays, but was a few steps behind the other Ultrabooks. In this respect, the latest version of the laptop is a real change in the game. The new 4K display covers 131.5% of the sRGB spectrum and has a maximum brightness of 305 nit. Since the top panel is large enough for a Full HD webcam with IR sensor and Windows Hello support, HP left it up to Dell to remind users to trim their nose hairs.

The Dell InfinityEdge’s 13-inch screen is a real beauty when the camera is badly positioned, with its almost non-existent bezel and a size of 3200 × 1800 pixels. It is slightly brighter than the HP Spectrum x360, but the color accuracy leaves much to be desired. The panel can reproduce 107.2% of the sRGB colour range, but the delta E rating is only about 6, which is far from the ideal rating of 0.

Dell XPS 13 vs HP Spectrum x360 Power

The Dell XPS 13 and HP Spectrum x360 both use different Intel processors. At Dell, you can choose from a variety of Intel Y-series processors (formerly called Core M processors). These processors have a dynamic operating mode that temporarily increases performance to help the Intel Y-Series processors withstand peak loads. In practice, the Dell XPS 13 is an instant ultrabook for professionals who want to succeed.

The HP Spectrum x360 is equipped with Intel 7-Gen Kaby Lake processors, offering consumers a choice of Core i5 and Core i7 processors. Whichever of these two processors you choose, you can be sure the Spectre will fly. Yes, it won’t be as quiet as the Dell XPS 13, but the extra power is noticeable when editing video or post-processing hundreds of photos.

You can get Dell XPS 13 and HP Spectrum x360 with up to 16GB of RAM and very large SSDs. The Dell XPS 13 has a lower battery than the HP Spectrum x360-46W compared to 57.8W, but the battery life of the two ultra-computers is almost the same thanks to the high efficiency of the Intel Y-series processors.

The Dell XPS 13 features two 1W speakers that deliver superior sound quality and excellent clarity even at high volume levels. Bang & Olufsen supplied loudspeakers in the x360 spectrum, four of which are located between the keyboard and hinge and at the bottom. The speakers can be very loud and they have an incredible amount of bass.

Dell XPS 13 vs HP Spectrum x360 Inputs

Neither Ultrabook has left us a better input device. Both keyboards were precise and easy to type, and both touchpads were smooth and pleasantly wide, although the HP Spectre x360 has a slightly larger touchpad.

Dells offers the Active Pen as an optional accessory for the Dell XPS 13. The pen has 2048 sensitivity levels, a built-in palm-rejection function, and a back button to start the Windows Start menu. HP also offers a pen – it’s time with 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity and different keys for different short-circuits. Neither pen is as good as Microsoft’s Surface Pen, but they both work well with OneNote and other notebook applications.

Dell XPS 13 vs HP Spectrum x360 Comparative opinion: The King is dead, long live HP Spectrum x360

The Dell XPS 13 remains an impressive ultrabook, especially since it now supports multiple modes. However, HP has invented an Ultrabook convertible that is even more impressive in almost every respect. The HP Spectrum x360 is more than the sum of its parts. The design, combined with the breathtaking performance, inspires and ensures that the Spectrum is worth every dollar spent.
