DSL modems/Wifi routers are a great way to simplify your network. You no longer need two separate devices and combine your router and modem into one simple device.

Why use a combination of DSL modem routers?

There are many reasons to use a DSL modem/router combination instead of a separate modem and router.

Before you do this, however, it is very important to confirm that your ISP allows you to use your own router and that a certain model is supported (or at least compatible) by your ISP.

Advantages of the DSLCombo Router

Saving money

Providers often charge you for the rental of the modem. If you buy your own modem/router, you can be exempted from the monthly rent of your Internet Service Provider.

Although it may seem more expensive at first glance, you may have saved money during the contract period (and also after the contract expires – as you can save the modem after the contract expires).

You can not only save money on the rental of the modem, but also on the router. Buying a combination product means you only need to purchase one device. Depending on the class of router you are looking for and the product(s) you choose, this means you can save some of your hard-earned money.

Space gain

By purchasing a combination product, you save space and have a simpler general network. Combining the two products in one box disconnects your network connection, so you have less to worry about on one device and fewer mistakes on the other.

Also, by physically having one less device in the house, you can save space for other products that will certainly be in your office.

Extended compatibility

Since your modem and the router are part of the same device, you know that there will be absolutely no compatibility problems (we mean between the modem and the router). Don’t forget to check with your ISP if you can use your own equipment 🙂

This can help with everything from simplifying configuration to solving network problems. When troubleshooting problems with a connection, only one device and/or one input and output line of the device may be tested.

Combined router deficiencies

Of course, having a combination product has some disadvantages.

Fewer choices

If you want to purchase a high-end router with the latest features, a DSL modem/router combination is not a suitable option. Don’t get me wrong, there are good combos on the market, but don’t wait for three groups and MU-MIMO, for example.

The combo routers in DSL products simply don’t keep up with the pace of working with a number of routers, which is sad.


If the device fails, you will notice that the modem and router components need to be replaced completely. However, if you have a separate router and modem, you can simply replace the defective device and continue working.

The same applies if you want to modernise your network. If you decide you need a router with more features, you will need to buy a new modem/router in the box or two separate new products. So when you buy a combination product, it may be worth thinking about what features you want to get from your router in the future.

What is the difference between an AC wireless router and an N DSL wireless router?

DSL modems/routers are generally available with wireless AC and N standards. Wireless air conditioners are the newer of the two standards and are becoming increasingly popular, while wireless N air conditioners are older but cheaper and more common.


As a new standard, Wireless AC offers a higher theoretical transfer rate than Wireless N. Wireless AC offers speeds of up to 2600 Mbps (in a band), while Wireless n offers speeds of up to 450 Mbps. It’s a big difference, and you’ll probably see a big increase in speed when you use 802.11ac to transfer files over your network.

In the real world, the actual speed is generally between 40 and 60% of the total amount of theoretical material promoted.

Channels and Beamforming

The 802.11ac uses the 5 GHz channel, while the 802.11n wifi uses both the 2.4 GHz channel and the 5 GHz channel. Although 802.11n wifi seems to have an advantage, this is not necessarily the case.

First, some 802.11ac devices use beamforming to send the Wi-Fi signal directly to your device. This can give you a stronger signal when you are further away from your router.

Although the beam simulation was available on 802.11n, it never got off the ground due to a lack of standardization. This means that the two products that support the beam shell do not necessarily work together effectively.

However, with 802.11ac Wi-Fi this has changed, and now all 802.11ac devices use the same standard bundle format.

Second, while wireless N routers have actually used the 5 GHz range, 802.11ac uses this range to achieve much higher data transfer rates with its new technology. Don’t forget that AC wireless routers are backwards compatible with the Wireless N, which means they are all dual-band.


Since this is of course a newer technology, 802.11ac routers are generally slightly more expensive than 802.11n routers. At the same time, as has been the case for several years, there are also more affordable products.

Before purchasing an 802.11ac modem/router, make sure you have or plan to have products that take advantage of the speeds offered. If your device is configured to use only 802.11n, you will generally not benefit from an 802.11ac router.

What is DSL internet?

DSL – digital subscriber line. ADSL works over copper telephone lines whose frequencies are not used for telephone calls.

DSL has become a major leap forward from the old dial-up technology and offers higher speeds through the use of newer and more advanced technologies. Another big advantage of the switch to ADSL was that users can use a landline and an internet connection at the same time. Yeah, we laughed, too. How times have changed!

ADSL vs VDSL vs SDSL: DSL types

There are different types of DSL, but the base 3 are:


Asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) is the most common type of DSL. It grew rapidly in the 2000s as a major upgrade of the switched/ISDN network.

The asymmetrical connection is due to the fact that upstream speeds are generally much lower than downstream speeds.

Note that over the years ADSL has been upgraded to ADSL2 and then back to ADSL2+, the latter being the fastest of its kind.


Very High Speed Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL) is the fastest type of DSL on the market. Unfortunately, this is not as common as the former ADSL enthusiast.

With VDSL you can see up to 60 Mbps downstream. This is achieved by using a configuration that reduces the distance required for signal transmission.

The disadvantage of VDSL is that it only works really well for users who are close to the switchboard. The distances are even further from the beginning of the exchange, resulting in less signal loss and therefore lower reliability and speed than with ADSL.


Symmetrical digital subscriber line (SDSL). We have decided to mention the SDSL, although it is beyond the scope of this article, so we will keep it very short. Upward and downward flow velocities are generally the same.

SDSL is more common in commercial environments (companies often need robust data rates) than in mid-sized households.

There are other types of DSL:

  • HDSL (High Bit-rate DSL) is another type of symmetrical connection.
  • ADSL Lite – slower version of traditional ADSL
  • R-ADSL (Rate Adaptive DSL) is a symmetrical line designed for businesses.

DSL router: Abbreviations and terminology explained

If you’re researching or buying a DSL router, there are a few shortcuts you’re likely to encounter repeatedly. Here are some common examples of wireless DSL routers:

  • ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) – a protocol used for communication over a telephone line between a modem and a provider’s router (probably on a local exchange).
  • PPPoA (Point-to-Point Protocol over ATM) – Used with ATM to enable authentication by specifying IP addresses.
  • PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) is a concept very similar to PPPoA. Maybe a little slower.
  • Ethernet is a standard that uses cables to connect network devices, usually with RJ-45 connectors for home users.
  • QoS (Quality of Service) – Ability to give priority to specific traffic types or devices (or combinations thereof). Especially useful for improving the quality of games, streaming and phone calls.
  • Mbps – Speed measurement between two network nodes
  • Gb/s (Gigabit per second) is the same as Gb/s, but faster.
  • GHz (gigahertz) – Range of radio frequencies. The 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands are often used by Wi-Fi devices.
  • SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) – A firewall attribute that stores Internet traffic initiated by your internal LAN devices in memory, allowing returned (trusted) traffic. Traffic from outside your (unreliable) network will not be missed.
  • NAT (Network Address Translation) – translates internal IP addresses to external IP addresses. It also acts as a stand-alone firewall.
  • The Internet Protocol (IP) address is a logical address used by network devices to communicate with each other.
  • LAN (Local Area Network) – network devices on the internal network. Can turn on your router.
  • WAN (Wide Area Network) – addresses outside your network. Internet addresses. May also include your router.
  • DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) – Automatic assignment of IP addresses. Normally this is provided by your router.

Known DSL Service Providers (ISPs)

Not all providers offer DSL services and not all allow you to buy your own modem router instead of renting one.

Also note that each provider offers different DSL services (e.g. ADSL or VDSL).

The Netgear Nighthawk series is common in our best lists, and this list is of course no exception. Like other products, it is an excellent device that offers high quality features to make your network as fast as possible.

The D7000 is actually the DSL equivalent of the very popular R7000 Nighthawk.

It’s dual-band and has four Ethernet ports for your wired devices. It also has a number of features such as beamforming and three adjustable antennas, which means you should be able to establish a good connection even at a greater distance from the router. Like the R7000, it is equipped with advanced QoS, allowing you to predict your game traffic (and everything else) in relation to other types (and users by the way).

It has an elegant black design that won’t look out of place where you put it, and the quality of the construction is quite surprising.

It’s certainly not the cheapest offer on our list, but for people who want a fast wireless network with some high quality features, the D7000 might be a good option.

As always, contact your service provider to see if there is a match. There are big differences between providers that support ADSL and VDSL.

The TP-Link archery series is another fixed part of our lists. It also offers many high quality features to help you get the most out of your network.

Once the cables are connected, the router is very easy to install, which is very useful if you are unfamiliar with the technology used. In addition to the ease of installation, you get many high quality features such as USB 3.0 sharing and dual-band connectivity.

The Nighthawk router may look less aggressive, but thanks to its slim, glossy casing, it cannot be moved around the office or at home. It has three antennas, all of which can be folded down when needed to give you more placement options.

The 802.11ac radio enables fast data transfer over the network and, despite many other high-tech features, is now slightly less expensive than the Netgear Nighthawk router. That’s a lot of boxes!

This is the first router in our list that uses the 802.11n standard. So the offered speeds are not that high.

However, if you do not plan to transfer files over your network as quickly as possible, this router should be powerful enough for most needs. It also has good security features and Ethernet ports if you really need a fast connection to certain devices.

In our opinion, the design is not as impressive as some of the other routers on the list and only has two antennas.

The main advantage is that it is much cheaper than the two above mentioned routers, which makes it ideal if you don’t need all the functions of the top layer of your network.

4. Netgear D6400 AC1600 Wi-Fi VDSL/ADSL modem router

This is the second set of Netgear on our list. Even though it is one step away from Nighthawk, it is still an excellent router/modem that offers many interesting features.

It’s dual-band, 802.11ac, and has Ethernet ports that provide your network with connectivity options for network load.

Although it lacks some of the high quality features of the Nighthawk router, it is still a fantastic multifunctional router.

This is certainly a budgetary option for the routers on our list. It’s not as fast as some other products, and it may not be as stylish, but it still offers some advantages.

Setting up this router is simple, and once it’s done, it’s easy to configure. The offered speeds can (theoretically) be limited to 300 Mbps, but this will still be sufficient for many people, especially if you want to use the router mainly for surfing the internet.

All in all, it’s a decent router at a reasonable price and perfect for people who just want a simple product that allows them to connect multiple devices to the internet without going crazy!

If you have a VDSL CenturyLink, you can take a look at the C1000A.

This combination has some nice little accents, including QoS (for smoother traffic management), port forwarding (to enable remote access – mainly for applications) and demilitarized zone hosting (for access to less sensitive devices). These are quite advanced features that should only be used if you know what you are doing.

It’s a wireless standard that only offers 2.4 GHz, which is fine if you have a handful of wireless devices in the house that need basic Internet access.

Note that the menu structure and some settings are not suitable for people with a weak heart. You can then start the default window. In fact, CenturyLink prefers you!

This vertical VDSL (and ADSL2+) modem/router is an N300 wireless device that allows multiple users to connect wirelessly with up to 4 Ethernet users.

You can also set up basic website filtering and, again, some basic access schedules if you want to restrict access to the Internet.

The C1100Z also supports TR-069 remote management, allowing CenturyLink to access the modem remotely in the event of a problem. The TR-069, also known as the CPE WAN Control Protocol (CWMP), was created by the Broadband Forum and works by allowing the modem (CPE) and the ISP (ACS) to communicate with each other.

D6200 is another .11ad WiFi modem, this time with a theoretical cumulative speed up to AC1200. This is 867 Mbps in AC (5 GHz) and 300 Mbps in Wireless N (2.4 GHz) – yes, this is a dual-band router.

The D6200 has four Gigabit Ethernet ports (and a 1 Gbps WAN port). Yes, it has an Ethernet WAN (if you want to make a cable connection, and a telephone connection for ADSL2+). There is also a USB 2.0 port for centralized storage and printing if you want to follow this path.

Like the other Netgear applications in our list, they support Netgear Genie and radiation modeling.

At the time of writing, the D6200 is compatible with CenturyLink, AT&T (ADSL only!) and Verizon services.

The PK5001z is a DSL server with four 1 Gbps Ethernet ports for cable network nodes.

Wireless communication offers a range of 2.4 GHz.

Like the C1100Z described above, the PK5001z supports basic web filtering, access and single port forwarding functions.
